In a significant move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, requesting immediate intervention to resume the halted construction of the Majuli-Jorhat bridge. The work on this vital project has been stalled since September 5, 2024, causing growing concerns over its completion within the planned schedule.
The Chief Minister, in his letter, expressed deep frustration regarding the lack of accountability from the contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, which has led to this critical delay. He emphasized the strategic importance of the bridge, a two-lane structure set to span the Brahmaputra River, connecting Majuli with Jorhat. This connection is not just crucial for daily transportation but holds immense significance for the region’s economic and social development.
Approved in 2021 under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode, the Majuli-Jorhat bridge is projected to cost Rs. 650 crores and is expected to be completed by December 2025. However, the recent halt in construction threatens to derail this timeline. CM Sarma pointed out the importance of utilizing the current dry season for construction work, warning that any further delays could lead to substantial time and cost overruns.
Sarma urged Minister Gadkari to take urgent action, including the possibility of re-tendering the project, if necessary, to ensure the work gets back on track. The Chief Minister’s appeal underscores his commitment to ensuring that this vital project, which will enhance connectivity and open up new opportunities for the people of Majuli and Jorhat, is completed without further delays.
